§ a small next gen firm

Counsel forthe next centuryof business.

Cognita Juris is a Tanzanian law firm advising companies at the frontier of technology, artificial intelligence, mining, and corporate enterprise. We are curious lawyers, obsessed with accuracy and innovation — building tools that deliver exceptional legal service.

Now accepting mandates — 2026Open a fileView practice

Law moves slowly. The industries we serve do not. Cognita Juris exists for the distance between those two clocks — translating emerging technology, novel regulation, and complex transactions into a story a board, an engineering team, or a mine operator can understand easily.

We are a deliberately small firm. Two partners, every file personally staffed, and a practice built around the belief that the best legal work in 2026 is produced by lawyers who understand how software, data, and capital actually move — and who use contemporary tools without apology.

We appear in Tanzanian courts, advise across East Africa, and partner with firms abroad when work calls for it. We represent the founder at the cap table, the miner at the negotiating table, and the defendant at the counsel table — often the same week.

What we do, and how we think about it.

Four interlocking practice areas shaped by a single conviction: that modern legal work should be as precise, as up-to-date, and as well-engineered as the businesses it serves.

Counsel for software companies, AI labs, platforms and product teams. Model governance, training-data provenance, terms of service, licensing, and the live regulatory edge where Tanzanian, African Union, and international frameworks intersect.

Mining &Natural Resources

Licensing under the Mining Act, mineral rights acquisitions, framework agreements with the Government, royalty and local-content compliance, and disputes over tenure. Extractive work in Tanzania remains a contested, high-stakes practice — we treat it as one.

Dispute Resolution &Litigation

Commercial disputes, judicial review, constitutional questions, arbitration, and appearances before domestic and international tribunals. Twelve years of courtroom work — approached with the same precision we bring to a term sheet.

A small firm with the bandwidth of a larger one.

We've rebuilt the legal workflow around the tools that actually make lawyers faster and more accurate — so that two partners can deliver the responsiveness clients expect from a boutique, and the depth they used to only get from a team of twelve.

§ 02.1 — Methodology

We use the best tools— and we know what they're doing.

Every matter runs through a disciplined stack of modern research, drafting, and review tools. We treat them the way a good surgeon treats their instruments: with training, with scepticism, and with a clear record of provenance. The output is always a lawyer's work.

§ 02.2 — Engagement

Partners do the work.

No pyramid. No hand-offs to a junior you've never met. The lawyer at the introductory call is the lawyer drafting the agreement, sitting across from the regulator, and arguing the appeal.

§ 02.3 — Pricing

Transparent by default.

Fixed fees for defined scopes. Clear estimates for open-ended ones. A retainer model for clients who want a general counsel on call. Hourly billing, where it's used, is itemised and contextual.

§ 02.4 — Network

Local roots, continental reach.

Through a decade of work with the Pan African Lawyers Union and the Tanganyika Law Society, we have working relationships with firms across East, Southern and West Africa — and with specialist counsel in London, Dubai, and New York when mandates cross borders.

Two partners. Every file, personally.

Cognita Juris is deliberately held to two senior practitioners. It is a constraint we chose — and the reason our clients get the lawyers they actually hired.
